Greyhound needs a home

Jila the greyhound with Erika and Isabell at Castlemaine RSPCA
Castlemaine RSPCA currently has lots of beautiful animals looking for a home.
These include Jila, a beautiful black greyhound-cross, who is 17 months old. Jila has been microchipped, vaccinated and desexed. If you can give her a home, call the shelter on 5472 5277.
Shelter manager Geoff Hall reminded people who were looking after their neighbour's pets over the festive season to ensure they had the necessary details close at hand in case the animal goes missing.
"If people take on the responsibility of looking after someone else's pet, they need to ensure the animal is microchipped, tagged and which vet to call if they need medical attention," Mr Hall said.
"It is also important to be able to contact the owner - either by mobile phone or on a landline number - in case anything goes wrong with the pet."
The shelter will be open normal hours outside of the public holidays and on Christmas Day and New Year's Day from 10am until noon. Castlemaine RSPCA staff and volunteers wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Indoor pool plans released

Mount Alexander Shire Council has released a concept design for the proposed $15 million indoor aquatic and leisure centre at Western Reserve.
The concept design is for a contemporary, multi-purpose facility made of timber cladding and glass that is treated to provide a soft, translucent finish.
Aquatic facilities include an eight-lane, 25 metre swimming pool, water play areas for infants and a warm water pool suitable for hydrotherapy and learn-to-swim programs.
Design features include seven tilt-up glass doors on the north and east walls of the pool hall, so that it can be opened up in fine weather.
These tilt-up doors will open onto a grassed picnic area that will overlook the swimming pool and both the indoor and outdoor water play areas. The open air theme extends to the cafe with an alfresco eating area and a crèche with a secure and shaded outdoor play space.
The design includes several new bike paths and walkways on Western Reserve and a 50-space carpark plus a drop-off area for cars and buses.
The total cost of constructing the centre is expected to be $15.2 million; the original cost was estimated to be $14 million in 2009.
Ten-year financial modelling based on similar centres in regional Victoria indicates the centre is likely to generate revenue of $1.4 million a year. Operating costs have been estimated at $1.681 million per year, leaving an annual operating cost to council of $276,000. This will reduce substantially upon closure of the existing Castlemaine pool.
Mayor Janet Cropley said: "The design is sympathetic to the site, locating the building on the southern portion of the Western Reserve."
The design meets the environmental sustainability objectives of council to limit greenhouse emissions and contain energy costs. Some of the features proposed include co-generation and e-water systems cleaning.
Energy usage will be minimised through a heat exchanger for pool hall ventilation and sub-metering technology to control and modify energy consumption throughout the centre.
Cr Ropley said there were a range of ways for people to find out more about the concept design and provide feedback.
"This includes an online presentation and fact sheets covering topics such as design, cost, environmental impact, parking and answers to frequently asked questions."
Additional information regarding the design, cost, parking, environmental sustainability and comparisons with similar facilities can be found on council's website at www.mountalexander.vic.gov.au in the Major Projects section.
This section of the website also includes an online presentation of the design with opportunity to provide feedback.
Information will also be available in local newspapers, at council offices and other civic facilities, including the library, senior citizen centres and visitor information centres.
Community members are invited to attend a series of community meetings next month at: Newstead Community Centre on Thursday, January 19, at 7.30pm; Castlemaine Town Hall on Sunday, January 22 at 1.30pm; Harcourt Leisure Centre on Monday, January 23 at 4pm; Maldon Community Centre, Monday, January 23 at 7.30pm; and, Taradale Hall on Tuesday, January 31 at 7.30pm. All welcome.
Council is expected to make a decision by March 2012 on how to proceed with the proposal.

Foodies flock to Castlemaine

Castlemaine's reputation as a popular food trail destination for day-trippers, weekend visitors and local residents continues to spiral to giddy heights.
In the past 18 months, the town's eateries have scored significant write-ups and rave reviews in the daily and national media, attracting an influx of the curious and hungry masses from Melbourne, across the region and even interstate to the historic town.
They bring their appetites and spending power to the goldfields, which they are happy to exchange for fine fare, good wine and a splash of local culture and history.
The publicity has not been by chance. It has been orchestrated by some well-known restaurateurs, who have a wealth of international experience and strong success from their previous ventures.
These include Alex Perry of The Good Table, Hayden Winch of The Public Inn, Joe and Rebecca Lim of A Taste of the Orient and Annie and John Stekerhofs of Apple Annie's Bakery and Cafe.
The media exposure ranges from regular salutes in The Age, reviews in the The Sydney Morning Herald and prime time exposure on television shows like Postcards.
Add to the mix, Castlemaine's Empyre Hotel, owned by John Ganci, which scored an impressive 14.5/20 in The Age Good Food Guide this year, to go within a whisker of getting the chance to flaunt a prestigious chef's hat, and you can understand why traffic on the culinary highway to Castlemaine is getting rather busy.
But it's not just the rave reviews and the award-winning chefs that lure people to eat in the goldfields.
A real buzz
Mount Alexander Shire's economic development and tourism manager, David Leathem says visitors want to know the story behind the eateries and the people who run them.
"They want to know about their passion for food and wine," he said. "It is also about the setting that visitors find themselves in when they visit local venues. In many cases the owners have incorporated the town's heritage and culture into their restaurants - many have been restored to their former glory and feature the work of local artists on the walls."
Mr Leathem says the shire has been working hard to get the media to visit the area and there is a real buzz occurring in the town as a result.
Healthy sign
The Public Inn owner, Hayden Winch has been in the industry for nigh on 20 years. He used to run the iconic Lake House at Daylesford and has also worked in Vietnam, Dubai and Hong Kong, running restaurants and hotels.
"We have been in Castlemaine for about 15 months and I would describe the Public Inn as a provincial bistro and bar," he said. "We try to use as much local produce as possible and the wine in our barrel wall is all sourced within 100 miles."
With two new restaurants opening in the town in the past month, and another on the way, Hayden says it's a healthy sign for the town.
"I don't think we are getting too many restaurants - you need a number of different venues to make a region grow."
Word spreads
John and Annie Stekerhofs opened Apple Annie's Bakery and Cafe just on two years ago and word has spread quickly about the John's outstanding pastries.
"We owned the French Lettuce in Carlton for 10 years and then went north to run a big restaurant on the Gold Coast," John said.
Annie says they came to Castlemaine mainly because they wanted their children to have a Steiner school education.
"It has a secondary component and that was important to us," she said.
John is obviously in his element, often waving to locals and greeting them with a big smile as he bakes a mouthwatering range of pies, breads and pastries at the front of the cafe.
He says Castlemaine is proving a popular food destination because it hasn't lost its quaintness.
"It has retained its historic feel and it's so diverse ... it's good to see the town grow."
Lively town
Alex Perry also opened his restaurant, The Good Table, just across the road from Apple Annie's, about two years ago.
Born and bred in Castlemaine, Alex moved to Melbourne after completing his VCE and completed his apprenticeship at the two-hat restaurant, Cafe di Stisio in St Kilda. He later worked at Ladro in Fitzroy and Movida in the city and gained valuable experience in Italian, French and Spanish cuisines which feature prominently on the The Good Table's menu.
"I love the fact that there is such a bountiful supply of great local produce - meat, eggs, honey and an endless supply of fruit," he said.
The Castlemaine food trail has a bright future, Alex says.
"I'm having the time of my life," he said. "What I like about Castlemaine is that it's a town that is just as lively on a Monday as it is on the weekends - it is not a town propped up by tourism."

Castlemaine Show results - 2011

The 156th Annual Castlemaine Show was a very dampened success. With the Gate down a little on last year, the weather turned very wet for the Friday night activities but considering bad conditions the towns folk still continued to give support Saturday with greater entries in the horse sections saw a lot more spectators than in previous years.
Pavilion entries were down in some sections but junior cooking as well as adult cooking was well supported, the children continue to support the horiculture.
Congratulations to all winners and thank you all for your dedication to the Show.
Thankyou to all judges, stewards and helpers and also the Castlemaine Fire Brigade, for organising the Street Parade and crowd control during the fire works display. Castlemaine SES for manning the gates on Friday night. Castlemaine Football Club for the clean up, Keith Thompson again for the use of the golf buggy, Don KR for the fireworks Display, Elliott Midland Newspapers and staff.
Special thanks to Victoria Restorations- D & B Button- Tonks Bros for the very attractive cubby house that was built and donated to the Agricultural Society to raffle. The raffle will be drawn on December 23.

Special thanks to all sponsors and exhibitors.
Also our very hard working voluntary committee.

- Secretary Debbie Hamilton.

Poetry slam in Castlemaine

Castlemaine poet, Terry Jaensch looking forward to the Poetry Slam heat

Poets, hip hop artists, outspoken wordsmiths: polish your rhymes and lyrics for the Castlemaine regional heat of the 2011 Australian Poetry Slam.
The Australian Poetry Slam is Australia's largest slam poetry competition. During October and November, the State Library of Victoria will co-ordinate heats at libraries and venues across the Victoria.
The local heat will be staged by Castlemaine Library at the Maurocco Bar in Templeton Street, Castlemaine on Wednesday, October 26, at 8pm. Hosting the event will be award-winning slam poet, Emilie Zoey Baker. "A slam is a poetry battle," says Emilie, "two minutes of on-stage fire."
The Maurocco Bar's resident Café Poet, Ann de Hugard, agrees.
"Slams are unpredictable, thrilling and enormously entertaining for the audience as well as for performers," Ann says. "They're also egalitarian as the judges are selected from the audience."
No more than 20 poets will have the chance to perform on the night. Registrations start at 7.30pm, so be sure to arrive early!
Ann recommends that entrants come along with two poems ready to perform, in case the contest comes down to a slam-off.
''We're so lucky to have Ann involved," says Alison Katona, manager of Castlemaine Library. "Last year she was runner-up of the slam at the Ubud Writers' Festival in Bali. Now, here's a chance for another local slam poet to shine on the international stage."
Two finalists from each heat will battle it out at the Victorian final at the State Library of Victoria on Friday, November 18. Then the Victorian winner and runner-up will compete at the National Final in Sydney.
The Australian Poetry Slam Champion wins a tour of China as part of the Bookworm International Literary Festival and will be invited to participate in the Ubud Festival - approximately $11,000 worth of flights, accommodation, expenses and performer's fees. All for a two-minute poem!
The Maurocco Bar is adjacent to the Castlemaine Railway Station.

Alex Miller II

Alex Miller, in the zone

Author, Alex Miller

Castlemaine author, Alex Miller's latest novel Autumn Laing has been received around the nation with an avalanche of exuberant reviews.
Australian Book Review described it as "a novel of such bravura intensity and insight into the jagged contours of the human heart ... an indispensable novel" while the Sunday Age says it is "an unmistakably Australian work of art".
The Australian agreed calling it "pure and living art" and the Canberra Times raves "Miller has invested this story of art and passion with his own touch of genius, and it is without question, a triumph of a novel".
Alex Miller, who has twice won both the Miles Franklin Literary Award and the Christina Stead Prize for Fiction in the NSW Premier's Literary Awards, looks slightly overwhelmed by the critics' stunning praise for his latest novel, Autumn Laing.
"As a writer, the apprehension you always have before your book is published is that it won't be acknowledged or received the way you see it," he said. "I have never had a book where the reviews have been so totally satisfying to me as they have been with this one. They have been immediately exultant and they seem to have got it.
"Overall, it has been so unexpected and wonderful."
Autumn Laing is the title character of the book and as the story goes, she seduces artist Pat Donlon with her pearly thighs and her lust for life and art. In doing so she not only compromises the trusting love she has with her husband, Arthur, she also steals the future from Pat's young and beautiful wife, Edith, and their unborn child.
Fifty-three years later, cantankerous, engaging, unrestrainable 85-year-old Autumn is shocked to find within herself a powerful need for redemption.
The novel is loosely based on affair between Sidney Nolan and Sunday Reed of Heide fame.
Miller, who has long been fascinated with Nolan's work, tells how he came to write Autumn Laing.
"I first wrote what is now chapter two, Autumn's (realist) portrait of the artist's first wife, Edith. After writing this chapter I had to leave the book while I spent a month on tour in the United Kingdom with my previous novel Lovesong.
"At the end of the tour (2010), I was sitting on a bench in Holland Park watching squirrels and remembering my boyhood in London's parks when the idea for the present form of the book suddenly occurred to me. I hadn't given the book a thought for a month.
"As I was sitting there that lovely September afternoon watching the squirrels diving about among the ivy I suddenly heard the voice of Autumn Laing, 'They are all dead,' she said, 'and I am old and skeleton-gaunt ...' It was a realisation. The realisation that the character I had originally based on Sunday Reed, Nolan's muse and lover and his greatest supporter during his early years, might have lived on until the age of 86, alone, deserted and with a deep sense of having been betrayed.
"The woman whose voice I heard that day was no longer the Sunday Reed of history but was my own fiction, a prompt from my imagination, a fiction of how such a person might have become had she lived another 10 years and had she decided to tell her story, telling it at a time of her life when she had nothing left to lose."
Miller, who is in the midst of a six-week tour promoting Autumn Laing, has just returned from the Ubud writer's conference in Bali where he was on a panel with Pakistani author Daniyal Mueenuddin.
"We were supposed to be talking about the sources of our material but because we are writers neither of us answered the question directly - we just gave a series of anecdotes, which was probably more entertaining."
Back in Castlemaine, Alex Miller sits at the kitchen table with a sandwich and a cup of tea. He says without a hint of boasting that Autumn Laing is definitely the best book he has written so far.
"I could feel it when I was writing it," he said. "I was just hoping it would finish strongly and that the energy wouldn't drop and thankfully, it stayed there. I was in the zone with this book."
He explains "the zone" comes when it is ready.
"You have got to have done the hard work, the hard yards, to reach the zone. You have got to be in a fit state mentally, emotionally and physically and you have got to have that bedrock energy that can be released.
"I've had periods of it before but I have never had it for the whole book like this time. Things were occurring and unfolding and flooding the conscious rather than being worked out by any sort of process.
"This book lived in me from the moment I heard Autumn Laing's voice."
Autumn Laing was officially launched by Belinda Probert at Readings in Hawthorn last Saturday. It is available in bookshops now.
